Part 2- BEWARE OF PSYCHOLOGY AND HYPNOTISM

How thankful we are that our heavenly Father in these last days gave us a prophet! The writings of the Spirit of Prophecy were designed to encourage and comfort, show us areas in doctrine and standards where additional reforms were needed, but also to sound warnings of terrible dangers that would come upon our people before the end of time.

The following is composed of Spirit of Pro­phecy statements, along with several from the Bible. Here you will find counsel regarding the extreme dangers of having anything to do with hypnosis or hypnotists. In reading these warnings, it is clear that hypno­tism is but a variant form of spiritism.

Spiritism (spiritualism) uses mediums (men and women who have sold their souls to Satan) to enable inquirers to more easily communicate with "departed spirits, " but actually with evil angels.

Hypnotism uses mediums to gain control over other human minds through various forms of hypnosis. In the earlier Spirit of Pro­phecy writings it is called mesmerism, af­ter its primary European advocate, the Frenchman F.A. Mesmer, (1734-1815). Mesmer called his hypnotic power "magnetic healing," and his followers for a time called it "mind-cure." Hence the use of these two synonyms of mesmerism in the Spirit of Prophecy. In the late 19th century it acquired the name hypnotism, and today bears the "scientific" name, hypnosis.

Information on how to recognize and avoid hypnotism is given in Hypnotism Ent­ers the Adventist Church.

"One night a scene was clearly presented before me. A vessel was upon the waters in a heavy tog. Suddenly the lookout cried 'Iceberg just ahead,' There, towering high above the ship, was a gigantic iceberg. An authoritative voice cried out, 'Meet it!' There was not a moment's hes­itation. It was a time for instant action. Well I knew the meaning of this representation. I had my orders. I had heard the words, like a voice from our Captain, 'Meet it!' I knew what my duty was, and that there was not a moment to lose. The time for decided action had come. I must without delay obey the command, 'Meet it!' "-1 Selected Messages, 205-206.

"At the beginning of my work I had the mind cure science to contend with. I was sent from place to place to declare the falseness of this science, into which many were entering. The mind cure was entered upon very innocently —to relieve the tensions upon the minds of nervous invalids. But, oh, how sad were the results! God sent me from place to place to rebuke every­thing pertaining to this science. "-2 Mind, Character, and Personality, 714.

"The time is at hand when a fearful confederacy will be formed, a brotherhood in­augurated by Satan. Unholy human agencies will combine with demon forces, and the whole will be imbued with satanic impulses."-Manuscript 154, 1899.

"The apostle Paul warns us, 'Some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to se­ducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.' Our greatest trials will come because of that class who have once advocated the truth, but who turn from it to the world, and tram­ple it under their feet in hate and derision. "God has a work for His faithful servants to do. The attacks of the enemy must be met with the truth of His word. Falsehood must be unmasked, its true character must be revealed, and the light of the law of Jehovah must shine forth into the moral dark­ness of the world. We are to Present the claims of His Word. We shall not be held guiltless if we neglect this solemn duty . .

 "We must cherish carefully the words of our God, lest we be contaminated by the deceptive workings of those who have left the faith. We are to resist their spirit and influence with the same weapons our Mas­ter used when assailed by the prince of darkness: 'It is written.' We should learn to use the Word of God skillfully. The exhortation is, 'Study to show thyself ap­proved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. . There must be diligent work and earnest prayer and faith to meet the winding error of false teachers and sed­ucers; for 'in the last days perilous times shall come.' "-Evangelism, 624-625.

"The mind cure [hypnotism] is the most awful science which has ever been advo­cated. Every wicked being can use it in car­rying out his own evil designs. We have no business with any such science. We should be afraid of it."-Manuscript 105, 1901.

"In these last days when skepticism and infidelity so often appear in a scientific garb, we need to be guarded on every hand. Through these means our great ad­versary is deceiving thousands, and lead­ing them captive according to his will. The advantage he takes of the sciences, scien­ces which pertain to the human mind, is tre­mendous. Here, serpent-like, he imperceptibly creeps in to corrupt the work of God. This entering in of Satan through the sciences is well devised. Through the channel of phrenology, psychology, and mesmerism, he comes more directly to the people of this generation, and works with that power which is to characterize his ef­forts near the dose of Probation."-2 Se­lected Messages, p. 351.

"There are those who greatly desire power, and who will use inventions that Satan places in their hands to gain power. The evil [one] has acquired wonderful power, and this power will be manifested as apparently a most wonderful blessing to the race."-Manuscript 78, 1905.

"We are to be on guard against Satan's deceptive arts. He will take possession of human bodies, and make men and women sick. Then he will suddenly cease to ex­ercise his evil power, and it will be pro­claimed that a miracle has been wrought. We need now to have a true understand­ing of the power of Jesus Christ to save to the uttermost all who come unto Him.

"Men and women are not to study the science of how to take captive the minds of those who associate with them. This is the science that Satan teaches. We are to resist everything of the kind. We are not to tamper with mesmerism and hypnotism,­ the sciences of the one who lost his first estate, and was cast out of the heavenly courts."-Medical Ministry, 110-11I.

"The world is to be flooded with specious fallacies. One human mind, accepting these fallacies, will work upon other hu­man minds who have been turning the pre­cious evidence of God's truth into a lie.

"These men will be deceived by fallen angels, when they should have stood as faithful guardians, watching for souls as they that must give account. They have laid down the weapons of warfare, and have given heed to seducing spirits. They make of no effect the counsel of God, and set aside His warnings and reproofs, and are positively on Satan's side, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. "­Letter 311 (October 30), 1905.

"I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen and was shown that it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the True Wetness to the laodiceans. This will have its effect upon the heart of the receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the straight truth. Some will not bear this straight testimony. They will rise against it, and this is what will cause a shaking among God's people."-Early Writings, 270.

"I was shown that by the rappings and mesmerism, these modern magicians would yet account for all the miracles wrought by our Lord Jesus Christ, and that many would believe that all the mighty works of the Son of God when on earth were accomplished by this same power."-Early Writings. 59.

"We must use great caution, to closely investigate his [Satan's] devices, lest we be deceived."-Manuscript 34, 1897.

"Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."-2 Corinthians 2:11.

"So long as we are ignorant of their [the evil angels'] wiles, they have almost incon­ceivable advantage; many give heed to their suggestions while they suppose them­selves to be following the dictates of their own wisdom . . It is his [Satan's] policy to conceal himself and his manner of working. "There is nothing that the great deceiver fears so much as that we shall become ac­quainted with his devices. . Satan can most readily control the minds of those who are unconscious of his influence." -Great Controversy, 516-517.

"God's Spirit has illuminated every page of Holy Writ, but there are those upon whom it makes little impression, because it is imperfectly understood. When the shaking comes, by the introduction of false theories, these surface readers, anchored nowhere, are like shifting sand." ­Testimonies to Ministers, 112.

"Neither one of you should study the science in which you have been interested. To study this science [hypnosis] is to pluck the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God forbid you or any other mor­tal to learn to learn or to teach such a science. The fact that you have had anything to do with this science ought alone to be sufficient to show you . . the inconsistency of your be­ing the leading physician in the sanitarium . . Cut away from yourselves everything that savors of hypnotism, the science by which satanic agencies work.."-2 Mind, Character, and Personality, 716.

"All will be shaken out who are not wil­ling to take a bold and unyielding stand for the truth and to sacrifice for God and His cause."-Early Writings, 50.

"The true principles of psychology are found in the Holy Scriptures. Man knows not his own value. He acts according to his unconverted temperament of character, because he does not look to Jesus, the Au­thor and Finisher of his faith. He who comes to Jesus, he who believes on Him and makes Him his Example, realizes the meaning of the words, 'To them gave He power to become the sons of God.' "-My Life Today, 176.

"Satan's chief work is at the headquart­ers of our faith. He spares no pains to cor­rupt men in responsible positions and to persuade them to be unfaithful to their sev­eral trusts . . These men who have been trusted to keep the fort have well-nigh be­trayed it into the hands of the enemy. They have opened the gates to a wily foe, who has sought to destroy them.

"Men of experience have seen stealthy hands slipping the bolts that Satan might enter; yet they have held their peace with apparent indifference as to the results. "­4 Testimonies, 210-211.

"The light given me has been very for­cible that many would go out from us, giv­ing heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. The Lord desires that every soul who claims to believe the truth shall have an intelligent knowledge of what is truth. False prophets will arise and will deceive many. Everything is to be shaken that can be shaken. Then does it not become everyone to understand the reasons for our faith? In place of having so many sermons, there should be a more close searching of the word of God, opening the Scriptures text by text, and searching for the strong evidences that sustain the fundamental doctrines that have brought us where we now are, upon the platform of eternal truth.

"My soul is made very sad to see how quickly some who have had light and truth will accept the deceptions of Satan, and be charmed with a spurious holiness. When men turn away from the landmarks the lord has established that we may under­stand our position as marked out in pro­phecy, they are going they know not whither.

"Spurious doctrines, spurious piety, spurious faith, much that is fair in appear­ance, abound all around us. Teachers will come clothed as angels of light; and if possible, they will deceive the very elect. The youth need to learn all they can of the truth if they would not be deceived by the tis­sue of falsehood that Satan will invent." Evangelism, 363-364.

"Satan's forces are preparing their se­ductive temptations to deceive, if possible, the very elect. Satan will work through those who have disregarded the warnings of God to the church. They will be exceed­ingly zealous under the working of a de­ceptive influence, and most strange manifestations will appear."-Letter 364, 1908.

"Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee."-1 Samuel 28:7-8.

"And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go inquire of Baalze­bub the god of Ekron whether I shall re­cover of this disease. But the angel of the lord said unto Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not be­cause there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?"-2 Kings 1:1-3.

"Satan can present a counterfeit so closely resembling the truth that it deceives those who are willing to be deceived, who desire to shun the self-denial and sacrifice demanded by the truth; but it is impossi­ble for him to hold under his power one soul who honestly desires, at whatever cost, to know the truth. "-Great Controversy, 528.

"There are doctors and ministers who have been influenced by the hypnotism ex­ercised by the father of lies. Notwithstand­ing the warnings given, Satan's sophistries are being accepted now just as they were accepted in the heavenly courts. The science by which our first parents were de­ceived is deceiving men today. Ministers and physicians are being drawn into the snare." -2 Mind, Character, and Personal­ity, 719.

"To dispute the supremacy of the Son of God, thus impeaching the wisdom and love of the Creator, had become the pur­pose of this prince of angels. To this object he was about to bend the energies of that master-mind, which, next to Christ's, was first among the hosts of God." ­Patriarchs and Prophets, 36.

"Spiritualism, which numbers its con­verts by hundreds of thousands, yea, by millions, which has made its way into sci­entific circles, which has invaded churches, and has found favor in legislative bodies, and even in the courts of kings,—this mammoth deception is but a revival, in a new disguise, of the witchcraft condemned and prohibited of oId." -Great Controversy, 556.

"Again and again we shall be called to meet the influence of men who are studying sciences of satanic origin, through which Satan is working to make a nonen­tity of God and of Christ. The truth that God has given for His people in these last days should keep them firm when there come into the church those who present false theories."-Manuscript 23, 1908.

"How art thou fallen from heaven, 0 Luc­ifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north, I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High."-Isaiah 14:12-14.

"The mind must be free from all human enchantment. It must not grovel to human­ity but soar aloft to the spiritual, taking hold of the eternal."-Medical Ministry, 110.

"The things you have described as tak­ing place in Indiana, the Lord has shown me would take place just before the dose of probation. Every uncouth thing will be demonstrated. There will be shouting, with drums, music, and dancing. The senses of rational beings will become so confused that they cannot be trusted to make right decisions. And this is called the moving of the Holy Spirit.

"The Holy Spirit never reveals itself in such methods, in such a bedlam of noise. This is an invention of Satan to cover up his ingenious methods for making of none effect the pure, sincere, elevating, enno­bling, sanctifying truth for this time.

"Satan works amid the din and confusion of such music, which, property conducted, would be a praise and glory to God. He makes its effect like the poison sting of the serpent.

"Those things which have been in the past will be in the future. Satan will make music a snare by the way in which it is con­ducted. God calls upon His people, who have the light before them in the Word and in the Testimonies, to read and consider, and to take heed. Clear and definite in­struction has been given in order that all may understand. But the itching desire to originate something new results in strange doctrines, and largely destroys the influ­ence of those who would be a power for good if they held firm the beginning of their confidence in the truth the Lord has given them."-2 Selected Messages, 36-38.

"It is not God's purpose that any human being should yield his mind and will to the control of another, becoming a passive in­strument in his hands." -2 Mind, Charac­ter, and Personality, 720.

"After the passing of the time in 1844, we had fanaticism of every kind 10 moot. Testimonies of reproof were given me to bear 10 some holding spiritualistic theories.

 "There were those who were active in disseminating false ideas In regard to God. Light was given me that these men were making the truth of no effect by their false teachings. Their false teaching was work­ing great harm to themselves and to oth­ers. They were gaining a spiritualistic power over those who could not see the evil of these beautifully clothed theories. .

"The experience of the past will be re­peated. In the future, Satan's superstitions will assume new forms. Errors will be Presented in a Pleasing and flattering man­ner. False theories, clothed with garments of light, will be Presented to God's people. Thus Satan will try to deceive, if possible, the very elect. Most seducing influences will be exerted; minds will be hypnotized. "Corruptions of every type, similar to those among the antediluvians, will be brought in to take minds captive. The ex­altation of nature as God, the unrestrained license of the human will, the counsel of the ungodly, these Satan uses as agencies to bring about certain ends. He will employ the power of mind over mind to carry out his designs."-8 Testimonies, 292-294.

"The physician should educate the people to look from the human to the divine. Instead of teaching the sick to depend upon human beings for the cure of soul and body, he should direct them to the One who can save to the uttermost all who come unto Him. He who made man's mind knows what the mind needs . .

"This is the life we are to present to the sick, telling them that if they have faith in Christ as the restorer, if they cooperate with Him, obeying the laws of health, and striv­ing to perfect holiness in His fear, He will impart to them His life. When we Present Christ to them in this way, we are impart­ing a power, a strength, that is of value; for it comes from above. This is the true science of healing for body and soul." ­Ministry of Healing, 243-244.

"To study this science [hypnosis] is to pluck the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God forbids you or any other mortal to learn or to teach such a science. The fact that you have had any­thing to do with this science, ought alone to be sufficient to show you, Brother N, the inconsistency of your being the leading physician in the sanitarium. .

"Cut away from yourselves everything that savors of hypnotism, the science by which satanic agencies work." -2 Selected Messages, 350.

"Satan has not been stupid and careless these many years, since his fall, but has been learning. He has grown more artful. His plans are laid deeper, and are more covered with a religious garment to hide their deformity. The power of Satan now to tempt and deceive is ten-fold greater than it was in the days of the apostles. His power has increased, and it will increase, until it is taken away. His wrath and hate grow stronger as his time to work draws near its close .

"God knows how Satan is working, and sends His angels to watch over His children, to protect them from the devil’s power. And the battle is constantly going on between the angels of God, and the devil’s angels. The angels of God are clothed with a complete armor, the panoply of heaven, and although surrounded with deadly foes, fear nothing, for they are doing the will of their loved Commander. They enter the darkest places to rescue the chil­dren of God from the snares of Satan, and their presence causes evil angels to fall back..

"I saw that the angels of God ace not to force or bend the will of the individual they watch over. They are to gently chide, warn and guard. Satan can never force back these holy angels from their charge. None can do this but the individuals that they are watching over. If these individuals continue to grieve these tender, holy angels; if they go astray from their counsel and warnings, and choose an independent course of their own, they will drive these angels from them. [But) If the will is submitted to them, they will bend it in the heavenly channel, and they will ever be on the watch for their interests, leading them from a thousand dangers, preventing their lives being taken by Satan, and, if they are inclined to go [into] a wrong course, stand in the path before them to prevent their ruin.

"But if individuals continue to retain their own will, choose their own course, and have their own way, the angels leave them in sadness. Then Satan comes in to control the will, and bend the mind, and smiles in hellish triumph at his success. "-2 Spir­itual Gifts. 277-278.

"All the people of God are now to stand on the platform of truth as it has been given in the third angel’s message. All the pleasant pictures, all the miracles wrought will be presented in order that, if possible, the very elect shall be deceived. The only hope for anyone is to hold fast the evidences that have confirmed the truth in righteousness. Let these be proclaimed over and over again until the dose of earth's history." Manuscript 61, 1900.

"The science of a pure, wholesome, consistent Christian life is obtained by study­ing the word of the Lord. This is the highest education that any earthly being can obtain..

. . For thousands of years Satan has been experimenting upon the Properties of the human mind, and he has learned to know it well. By his subtle workings in these last days, he is linking the human mind with his own, imbuing it with his thoughts; and he is doing this work in so deceptive a man­ner that those who accept his guidance know not that they are being led by him at his will. The great deceiver hopes so to confuse the minds of men and women that none but his voice will be heard." -Medical Ministry, 111.

"’For I know this, that after my depart­ing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch and remember. .'

"He who holds the truth in unrighteous­ness, who declares his belief in it, and yet wounds it every day by his inconsistent life, is surrendering himself to the service of Sa­tan and leading souls to ruin. This class hold intercourse with fallen angels and are aided by them in gaining the control of minds.

"When Satan's bewitching power con­trols a person, God is forgotten, and man who is filled with corrupt purposes is extolled. Secret licentiousness is practiced by these deceived souls as a virtue. This is a species of witchcraft.

"The question of the apostle to the Ga­latians may well be asked: 'Who hath bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?'

"There is always a bewitching power in heresies and in licentiousness. The mind is so deluded that it cannot reason intelli­gently, and an illusion is continually lead­ing it from purity. The spiritual eyesight becomes blurred, and persons of hitherto untainted morals become confused under the delusive sophistry of those agents of Satan who profess to be messengers of light. It is this delusion which gives these agents power. Should they come out boldly and make their advances [whether of here­sies or licentiousness] openly they would be repulsed without a moment's hesitation; but they work first to gain sympathy and se­cure confidence in themselves as holy, self-sacrificing men of God. As His [pretending to be God's] special messengers they then begin their artful work of drawing away souls from the path of rectitude by attemp­ting to make void the law of God. "-5 Tes­timonies, 142-143.

"Organizations, institutions, unless kept by the power of God, will work under Satan's dictation to bring men under the control of men; and fraud and guile will bear the semblance of zeal for truth and for the advancement of the kingdom of God. Whatever in our practice is not as open as day, belongs to the methods of the prince of darkness. His methods are prac­ticed even among Seventh-day Adventists, who claim to have advanced truth.

"If men resist the warnings the Lord sends them, they become even leaders in evil practice; such men assume to exer­cise the prerogatives of God – [in fact] they presume to do that which God Himself will not do in seeking to control the minds of men. They introduce their own methods and plans, and through their misconcep­tions of God they weaken the faith of oth­er’s in the truth, and bring in false principles that will work like leaven to taint and cor­rupt our institutions and churches. Any­ thing that lowers man's conception of righteousness and equity and impartial judgment, any device or precept that brings God's human agents under the control of human minds, impairs their faith in God; it separates the soul from God; for it leads away from the path of strict integrity and righteousness." - Testimonies To Ministers, 366.

"No man is a proper judge of another man's duty. Man is responsible to God; and as finite, erring men take into their hands the jurisdiction of their fellow men, as if the Lord commissioned them to lift up and cast down, all heaven is filled with indignation. There are strange principles being estab­lished in regard to the control of minds and works of men by human judges, as though these finite men were gods . .

"Unless men are daily in communion with God, instead of seeking Him with all their heart for a fitness for the work, they will assume the power of dictation over the conscience of others. A sense of the divine presence would awe and subdue the soul, but this they have not . .

"Is the working of the cause of God to be entrusted to such hands? Are souls for whom Christ has died, to be manipulated at the will of men who have refused the light given them of heaven? We should be afraid of man-made laws, and of plans and methods that are not in accordance with the principles of the word of God concern­ing man's relation to his fellow. 'All ye are brethren.' "-Testimonies to Ministers, 348, 349.

"I am instructed that you [J.H. Kellogg] are entertaining ideas with which God has forbidden you to deal. I will name these as a species of mind cure. You suppose that you can use this mind cure in your profes­sional work as a physician. In tones of earn­est warning the words were spoken: Beware, beware where your feet are placed and your mind is carried. God has not ap­pointed you this work. The theory of mind controlling mind is originated by Satan to introduce himself as the chief worker, to put human philosophy where divine philos­ophy should be.

"No man or woman should exercise his or her will to control the senses or reason of another, so that the mind of the person is rendered passively subject to the will of the one who is exercising the control. This science may appear to be something beau­tiful, but it is a science which you are in no case to handle . .

"I lift the danger signal. The only safe and true mind cure covers much. The phy­sician must educate the people '" look from the human to the divine. .

"This science may appear of you to be very valuable; but to you and to others it is a fallacy prepared by Satan. It is the charm of the serpent, which stings to spiritual death. It covers much that seems wonderful, but it is foreign to the nature and Spirit of Christ This science does not lead to Him who is life and salvation."-Medical Ministry, 111-112­

"[In heaven] The insinuations of Satan took effect, and they . .[the angels] really came to believe that the Father and the Son were their enemies and that Satan was their benefactor. Satan has the same power and the same control over minds now, only it has increased a hundredfold by exercise and experience. Men and women today are deceived, blinded by his insinuations and devices, and know it not..

"They rise up with bitter feelings against the ones who dare to speak of their errors and reprove their sins. Those who have in the fear of God ventured out to faithfully meet error and sin, calling sin by its right name, have discharged a disagreeable duty."-3 Testimonies, 328.

"With strong arms and brave hearts go forth into the conflict [that] all must enter, a conflict that will grow more and more severe as we approach the closing struggle. "-Manuscript 18a., 1901.

"The time has come when even in the church and in our institutions, some will de­part from the faith, giving heed to seduc­ing spirits and doctrines of devils. But God will keep that which is committed to Him. Let us draw near to Him, that He may draw near to us. Let us bear a plain, clear tes­timony right to the point, that hypnotism is being used by those who have departed from the faith, and that we are not to link up with them. Through those who depart from the faith, the power of the enemy will be exercised to lead others astray. .. -3 Selected Messages, 411-412­

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. "-Colossians 2:8.

"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pul­ling down of strongholds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. "-2 Corinthians 10:4.

"Sanctify the Lord of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread."-Isaiah 8:13.
